His strong performances on the pre-season tour filled everybody with optimism that he could go on to become a top defender in the Premier League but nobody expected him to make such a strong start to his Man United career.
On his Old Trafford debut, he was arguably United’s man of the match against Tottenham Hotspur and he continued that great form last night at Villa Park.
Darmian looks so assured both in defence and attack. Usually it takes foreign players time to adapt to the Premier League but he plays like he was born in England. Nothing looks foreign to him at all, he already looks completely at home.
His excellent stats so far, via Squawka, show just how well he has played:
In his pre-match analysis, Gary Neville was full of praise for Darmian. Having watched him play in Italy quite often as part of his England duties, he has seen far more of him than most of us and is completely confident in his ability to become a fantastic player for United.
If he’s good enough for Gary, he’s good enough for me. There isn’t anybody better placed to say whether Darmian has what it takes to follow in his footsteps at United as a top class right-back.
The full-back positions are so important in Louis van Gaal‘s style of play because their overlapping runs are where all the natural width comes from, so to have Darmian and Shaw starting the season in such good form has had a real impact.
Not only that but both Darmian and Shaw have been so composed in defence. Their positioning is spot on and they are quick in the transition from defence to attack.
Of course, we’re only two games in and Darmian is not a world beater (yet) but it’s hard not to be excited about how well he has started his United career. Next up is another new challenge – a Champions League tie at Old Trafford.
