Louis van Gaal has confirmed that striker Javier Hernandez will receive opportunities to play as a striker this season.
Hernandez was given a second chance at Manchester United after an unsuccessful loan spell at Real Madrid last season, much to the surprise of fans as many felt his time at the club was over.
The Dutchman confirmed that the 27-year-old was his second choice forward behind captain Wayne Rooney and despite being deemed as backup for Rooney, Van Gaal has insisted Chicharito will have numerous opportunities up front in light of Rooney’s ability to occupy midfield and No.10 roles.
“We have chosen him and Chicharito will be the substitute, but Rooney can also play in the no.10 position, so Chicharito has a chance to play in the striker’s position,” said Van Gaal.
“Normally, though, Rooney will play because we have the confidence that he will score more than 20 goals there, which is more than the strikers did last year.”
That indicates Chicharito’s chances may not be as forthcoming as he’d hope but Van Gaal seems adamant they will come.
United fans remain unconvinced as to whether Chicharito has the ability to return to his old self again but if he can take his opportunities as well as Januzaj when he is presented them, then maybe we’ll all be eating our hats.
It’s certainly needed because Rooney was invisible as United’s main striker against Villa and wasn’t much better against Spurs. He desperately needs to improve if United are going to challenge for any trophies this season.
