Fellaini donned the shirt for the past two years but gave it up in order for Schweinsteiger to take the number.
Schweinsteiger confirmed that being given his preferred shirt number was part of the reason he feels he has settled in well to life at Man United.
In an interview with MUTV, the 31-year-old was asked whether the shirt had helped his transition from Bayern Munich to United.
“Yeah it does a little bit,” he said.
“I was happy that the coach gave me the no.31 and was really surprised as well.”
The World Cup winner was extremely appreciative towards Fellaini, who will now wear the No.28 on his back.
He added: “Thank you to Felli too. For me, I played there since I played my first game for Bayern and 31 means a lot to me. I didn’t expect the coach would give me the number but he decided, and the club decided, and it gives me a little bit more feeling like I’m at home, yes.”
United fans will be trying to make their new midfield general as welcome as possible after his move from Munich, when Schweinsteiger became the first German to sign for the club.
After impressing in his first two competitive games for the Reds, Schweinsteiger will be hoping to go form strength to strength in his early days as a Premier League footballer.
