If you asked Manchester United fans what striker they would like to sign this summer, Thomas Muller is a name who would crop up on pretty much everybody’s list.
However, the idea of him leaving Bayern Munich this summer is inconceivable to most, especially after Bastian Schweinsteiger already exited the German giants for Man United.
Yet, that hasn’t stopped the rumours from continuing to rumble on and now the Daily Express has taken those one step further.
The back page of today’s print edition can’t be accused of trying to push across any mixed messages: “Muller wants to join United”.
Even if Muller did want to join and be re-united with Louis van Gaal, realistically there is absolutely no chance Bayern would let him leave. Their fans would go ballistic if both Schweinsteiger and Muller were sold in the same window, two players who embody the club more than most.
There isn’t anybody better suited to what United need right now under Van Gaal. Muller’s a natural born goalscorer, is multi-functional and knows exactly how the Dutchman’s style works having played under him at Bayern Munich.
Unfortunately, there’s surely more chance of Ruud van Nistelrooy leading the line at United this season than Muller.
Regardless of whether the 25-year-old does want to play under Van Gaal, it is up to Bayern whether they sell their poster boy and, in all honesty, they’d be absolutely mad to let him leave.
That being said, get your chequebook out Ed Woodward and test their resolve. Why not? The money is there for United thanks to the success of the corporate side of the club, so it may as well be spent on players rather than interest repayments.
