Sergio Ramos has insisted he never wanted to leave Real Madrid after signing a new contract which will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2020.
It was disappointing news for Man United fans to hear as a number of supposed targets over the years have flirted with transfers to Old Trafford before signing new deals at their current clubs.
Ramos revealed that committing to Madrid was a “dream” and that he was never motivated by money.
“This is a dream that I want to enjoy for as long as possible. I thank my president, my agent, brother and friends. Thank you for your professionalism. You have been here at all times,” he said.
“My family has been by my side and helped me maintain a personal and professional balance.
“Thank you to the fans, my coaches and peers. To sign for this club is an honour and a privilege, as is wearing the captain’s armband.”
“There is no bigger club in the world. My happiness is my priority in any decision. The money has never moved me. Happiness and family are my priorities. I never said I wanted to leave Real Madrid.”
The fierce speculation coming out of Spain regarding Ramos’ future had given supporters hope that the Spaniard genuinely wanted to join United but his comments would suggest otherwise.
Of course, he would never publicly admit to wanting to leave Madrid but I suppose we’ll never know. The silver lining for United fans is that Ramos’ new deal means David de Gea will more than likely stay at Old Trafford for one more year.
