Louis van Gaal has warned his Manchester United squad that they must show their quality against Club Brugge on Tuesday.
Brugge visit Old Trafford for the first leg of the Champions League qualifying playoff and the manager realises the threat they pose.
Having finished second in the Belgian league last year, Brugge aren’t to be taken lightly and complacency is United’s worst enemy tonight.
Van Gaal is keen for United to be on top of their game and speaking at his press conference before the game, Van Gaal referenced how tough Arsenal found the same stage of the competition last year.
He said: “As Arsene Wenger said last year these games are very difficult. Brugge under their coach can defend very well.
“We have to show our quality against a good team.”
Van Gaal reserved special praise for Brugge midfielder Victor Vasquez. The Spaniard is seen by many as the biggest threat to United over the two legs and the manager commented on the 28-year-old’s ability.
He added: “I think he is very good, one of the key players. Not only fast but he has good vision.”
The importance of the tie can not be underestimated, especially after United’s failure to qualify for the competition last year.
Having done the hard work in finishing fourth last season, Van Gaal will now want to lead his side into the group stage of Europe’s premier club competition.
