Arjen Robben backs Memphis Depay to become one of the world’s best players

Arjen Robben has backed Manchester United forward Memphis Depay to become one of the best players in the world.

The Dutch attacker is just 21-years-old but has already settled into life at Old Trafford with two Champions League goals against Club Brugge during the week.

Robben and Memphis have been teammates with the Dutch national side since the latter broke into the team under Louis van Gaal in 2013.

Robben insisted Memphis will achieve great things at Old Trafford and that it was an “easy” decision for him to join United over Liverpool.

“He [Memphis] can become one of the top players in the world at Manchester United,” Robben said.

“He is already at such a high level, but playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world he will get even better. Manchester United will want to get back to winning trophies, and he will be a big part of that.

“I know that there was Liverpool and Manchester United interested in him, but it was an easy decision for him. There would have been no reason for him to join a club not playing in the Champions League, and Louis van Gaal is one of the best coaches in the world.

“Memphis can become the complete player under his [Van Gaal’s] guidance. It will not be easy, it never is when there are so many new players to settle him, but I think Louis could win the league with Manchester United this year. It’s his team now, his players, and if the new signings settle quickly, I think it’s possible.”

It is interesting to hear the opinion of a player who plays in a similar role to Memphis. The two have many similarities and it is encouraging for United fans to hear a man of Robben’s stature backing their new signing.

Robben was a success at Chelsea before making his way to Real Madrid and then onto Bayern Munich and he knows what it takes to play at the best clubs in the best leagues in the world. That kind of praise is something that doesn’t come around very often but it seems that Memphis is capable of taking such comments in his stride.
