Diego Forlan: Pedro could regret choosing Chelsea over Manchester United

by Robbie Dunne

Diego Forlan believes Pedro will live to regret the choice he made by selecting Chelsea over Manchester United.

Pedro was announced as a Chelsea player today following weeks of speculation linking him to Manchester United.

United and Pedro had reportedly agreed personal terms and it appeared as though all that had to be done was the signing of the transfer form. Jose Mourinho had other plans.

The former United and Uruguay striker had some harsh words for Chelsea Football Club and is in little doubt regarding where the former Barcelona players should have moved.

Forlan wrote in his column for The National:

“As a player, I know who’d I’d choose if Manchester United and Chelsea came in for me. One is one of the three clubs biggest in the world; the other is a club who’ve grown because of a rich owner.

“But I always remember my old captain Roy Keane before a game against Tottenham Hotspur. He said: ‘Tottenham think they’re a big club and they are in London, but they’re not really a big club, they don’t compare to United.’

“Chelsea are the same. When I moved to England they were not a team which came close to winning big trophies. Money changed them. I was always going to Manchester, a city which would become my home. I didn’t regret that. I hope Pedro doesn’t regret his decision.”

Pedro had chosen United as the place he wanted to move after life at Barcelona and the lack of minutes he was getting had pushed him towards the door.

The agreement of personal terms is striking in how close the deal really was. United might have been overly confident in the Spanish international’s desire to join and were pipped at the post by a domestic and European rival.

United still have time to identify and buy a replacement but this will hurt United more than most think. They have strengthened a rival while losing out on a player they seemed convinced could contribute immediately for them.

At the moment, United still have a lack of balance in their squad and will need to act fast in the coming weeks to make sure this summer transfer window doesn’t see them fall behind their rivals.
