Beattie: Southampton must not sell Mane to Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Former Southampton player James Beattie has insisted that Senegalese winger and surprise Manchester United transfer target Saido Mane should not be sold.

Man United are interested in the winger after losing out on long term transfer target Pedro who joined Chelsea instead.

A reported bid for the 23-year-old was made last week but only came to the surface once Pedro’s move to Chelsea was confirmed.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Beattie has reiterated Ronald Koeman’s stance on the issue, asserting that the winger should remain on the south coast.

“It’s very important for the club to keep him. You never want to sell your best players and Mane is certainly is at Southampton,” said Beattie.

“He can influence games. He’s very off the cuff, quick and direct and defenders don’t like that.

“Hanging on to your top players is nearly at the top of the list for every club, and it was Koeman who brought him in, so he won’t want to lose him on that account too.”

Southampton have lost seven key players in the last two summer transfer windows and are understandably reluctant to let a bright talent like Mane leave the club.

After Louis van Gaal supposedly abandoned his pursuit of Pedro, fans are understandably asking where United’s focus current lies in the transfer market but the interest in Mane came as a bolt out of the blue. That being said, he is a fast and creative player which fits the bill in terms of what Van Gaal is looking for in an Angel di Maria replacement.

United are still expected to be active in the current window with at least one new signing and although Southampton will stand strong with Mane, every player has his price.
