Louis van Gaal was left ‘satisfied’ with Manchester United’s performance during their 0-0 draw with Newcastle at Old Trafford.
Man United dominated the game from start to finish and were extremely unlucky not to take the lead, when Wayne Rooney had a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out for offside.
The Reds also had the vast majority of possession and chances throughout the game but could not find the finishing touch to take the lead against the Geordies.
Nevertheless, the manager was not downbeat following the disappointing result.
Speaking after the game, he said: “I think we can be satisfied about the performance but not about the result because we don’t reward ourselves. I think we have created a lot of chances and we were unlucky.”
United had 20 attempts on goal with eight of them hitting the target, yet couldn’t breach a shaky Newcastle defence.
After a hugely impressive first 25 minutes, there was a sense of optimism every time the Reds went forward. However, this slowly turned to desperation as the game wore on, as United threw more and more men forward in search of a goal.
Van Gaal’s comments may come as a surprise to some United supporters, given the frustration of not being able to win their third game in a row in the league.
That being said, United were an incorrect offside decision and a couple of sharper finishes away from beating Newcastle comfortably.
The manager will now turn his attentions to the trip to Brugge in midweek and he will be hoping his side can get the stroke of luck they seemed to be missing against Newcastle.
