Manchester United’s potential XI vs Club Brugge – Javier Hernandez starts up top

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Club Brugge last week means that Louis van Gaal‘s side are firm favourites to reach the Champions League group stages.

All Man United need to do is avoid losing by a two goal margin against a side that barely troubled them in the first leg at Old Trafford.

However, with a commendable home record on Brugge’s side, Wednesday’s encounter is set to be a sterner test for a United defence who have shown great promise in their opening four games, conceding just once.

After a buoyant start, United’s attacking performance against Newcastle United last weekend turned painfully predictable and somewhat languid, with captain Wayne Rooney continuing to show signs of sluggishness in attack. Van Gaal may want to give his side a different attacking dimension ahead of this crucial contest.

The Dutchman may move Rooney into the No.10 role at the expense of Adnan Januzaj, thus giving Javier Hernandez his first start of the season. Introducing Hernandez would give United a livelier option up front and allow a confidence sapped Rooney more touches on the ball.

Chicharito proved to be the deciding factor in Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid last season, scoring a late goal in the second leg. Using the experienced and notoriously prolific Mexican from the start could well give United a conclusive upper hand in the tie.
