Manchester United’s Chris Smalling: Javier Hernandez is looking sharp in training

by Sam Koster

Chris Smalling feels Javier Hernandez was unfortunate not to score against Newcastle United and has revealed he is looking sharp in training.

The Mexican striker came off the bench late on during Man United’s draw against Newcastle and almost secured the win late on for his club, but was denied by an instinctive save from Tim Krul.

Chicharito is now vying for an opportunity as United’s first-choice striker after spending last season on loan at Real Madrid, where he scored seven goals in 16 appearances, but Madrid decided not to buy him at the end of their loan spell.

Despite not getting a goal yet this season, Smalling is clearly still confident of Chicharito’s ability.

“Chicha is looking so lively in training and he had a great chance as well,” Smalling told MUTV.

“He was just unfortunate that a couple of metres either side and that nicks a goal.”

With Wayne Rooney so far failing to find the net this season, Hernandez will be hoping that his efforts in training are not going unnoticed by Louis van Gaal. Upon the Mexican’s introduction against Newcastle, United looked much more dangerous in front of goal, something which they have lacked in the first three games of the season.

With only nine days left of the transfer window, it remains to be seen whether United will recruit a new striker. If they fail to do so, van Gaal may realise that he has a strike option much closer to home than first thought. With 37 goals in 49 starts for United, Hernandez certainly has the credentials to be given a chance as United’s main man.
