Ander Herrera keen on No.10 role at Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Ander Herrera has expressed his desire to play in the No.10 role for Manchester United.

Louis van Gaal explained earlier on in the season that Herrera plays too deep in order to fulfil that role, instead placing Adnan Januzaj in the position and consigning the talented Spaniard to the bench, much to the bewilderment of supporters.

However, after Herrera’s exceptional display at No.10 in the second half against Club Brugge on Wednesday night, which saw the 26-year-old assist Man United’s second and score their fourth, there have been calls for him to be permanently used in that position.

When asked about the subject, Herrera insisted that he would be happy to occupy the No.10 role at United.

“I am happy playing,” Herrera said.

“If I have to play holding midfielder I will do. Last season I think I played more as the midfielder than as a No.10 but if I have to play as No.10 I try to help the team scoring, assisting and this is the way I have to take.”

Herrera’s supreme range of passing and deftness on the ball certainly befits a No.10, and playing alongside wingers Memphis Depay and Juan Mata would allow for more fluidity in United’s attacks, which have occasionally turned insipid this term, particularly in the Premier League.

The Spaniard’s proven eye for goal further supports the notion that the No.10 role is where his future lies. Van Gaal may prefer the likes of Memphis or Januzaj to be there, but based on last night’s sensational attacking onslaught, which saw Herrera central to all moves, it’s clear to see who United fans want to see in that position for the remainder of the campaign.
