Ander Herrera’s performance at No.10 against Club Brugge was fantastic

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is over the moon at the club’s progression to the Champions League group stages.

Herrera recorded an assist and a goal as Man United saw off Club Brugge 4-0 in Belgium and secured their place back in Europe’s biggest club competition.

Making his first start of the season, the Spaniard struggled in the first half. The 26-year-old couldn’t keep hold of the ball and had a few efforts on goal well off target. It seemed as if Herrera was off the pace and couldn’t quite cope with Brugge’s midfield.

Some United fans were surprised to see the midfielder return for the second half but he did so in a more advanced role, following the substitution of Adnan Januzaj.

After the switch, Herrera looked like a different player in a three-man midfield alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick and started to make his mark on the game.

After some brilliant work from Memphis Depay, Herrera put the ball on a plate for Wayne Rooney to score his second goal of the night. Schweinsteiger then played in Herrera with a sumptuous through ball, taking five players out of the game, and the ex-Bilbao man had no problem slotting the ball past the helpless Brugge goalkeeper.

As Louis van Gaal now looks towards Premier League action against Swansea on Sunday, Herrera will be firmly in the manager’s thinking. After a hugely impressive second half performance, the Spaniard seems to be doing everything right to regain his starting spot in United’s lineup.
