Negotiations between the two clubs have stalled in recent weeks due to Man United’s insistence that De Gea will not be sold for anything less than a world record fee for a goalkeeper despite the fact that he only has a year left on his contract.
However, De Gea and Madrid are still confident that an agreement can be reached before the window shuts.
The Spaniard has been left out of all of United’s matchday squads so far this term and he is not expected to play in a behind closed doors friendly with Ajax scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
When Madrid target a player, they usually get him so it is refreshing to see United’s hardball stance when it comes to De Gea.
If he does stay at Old Trafford, the club risks including an unhappy player in their starting XI.
However, to De Gea’s credit, he has largely remained professional during the saga and he would have to put in some good performances with the European Championships coming up this summer.
