Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has voiced his disapproval of the entire David De Gea transfer saga and wants to see the Spaniard commit to the club.
De Gea has been subject to long term interest from Real Madrid throughout the summer, and is reportedly keen to leave Manchester in order to return to his hometown.
However, Louis van Gaal is reluctant to let the goalkeeper leave. This, on top of the goalkeeper’s continued exclusion from the squad due to the distraction, has led to a breakdown in relations between the Dutchman and De Gea, as well as causing the entire debacle to become stagnant.
Schmeichel has declared that the situation needs to be resolved.
“I hope that we’ll see him. I hope that some kind of resolution is found within the next couple of days,” he said.
“I would love David de Gea to commit to Manchester United, you know, and sign a new five-year contract. He has been absolutely outstanding in the last two seasons.
“But I also understand when Real Madrid – who are from his home town – when they come calling, of course you want to go back there.
“I think everyone would think like that so I’ve got great understanding. I’m very, very thankful for what he’s done for Manchester United and I would hold nothing against him if he moves on. But I want the situation to be resolved. I think it’s an absolute joke that it’s carried on into the season.”
As a staunch professional with his sights firmly on the European Championships next summer, De Gea will be fully committed to the cause, even under a manager he probably despises by now, which means that there shouldn’t be any concerns surrounding the goalkeeper’s concentration this season.
However, the present situation does require closure, since the poisonous nature of this narrative is apparently permeating throughout the squad.
