Guillem Balague: Manchester United are unwilling to pay €50m for Aymeric Laporte

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has insisted Manchester United are unwilling to shell out €50m for Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte.

The French defender has been subject to long term interest from Louis van Gaal after establishing himself as a prominent figure in Bilbao’s starting XI as an 18-year-old back in 2012.

In the midst of the side’s centre back issues last season, many Man United fans were keen on seeing the highly rated defender come to Old Trafford.

However, Balague is adamant that United are unwilling to meet the 21-year-old’s buy out clause.

“Laporte is wanted by Bayern Munich. He renewed his contract and now his buy out clause is €50m which Athletic Bilbao will not negotiate. I feel Manchester United do not feel he is worth that much money,” said Balague in his live Q&A with Sky Sports.

Laporte is a promising talent, who at a remarkably young age flourishes in La Liga, so his buy out clause is no surprise but it’s a big amount for somebody so young.

Right now, United need somebody established and world class to add to the defence. At 21, maybe Laporte is not the sort of signing Louis van Gaal wants to make.
