The 19-year-old will complete his move to Manchester United this afternoon after he successfully passed his medical on Monday and he’ll likely become the most expensive teenager ever when the deal is officially announced.
Following reports which emerged in the press, Rooney quizzed Schneiderlin on Martial and he let him know just how good a player he could be.
Speaking about Martial, Rooney said: “To be honest, [on Sunday] on the plane, Wayne Rooney came to speak to me and asked me who Martial was, because the English press had started to speak,” the former Southampton player told reporters in France.
“I told him he’s a great player with great potential, who has played some good matches with Monaco last season and the beginning of this.
“I told him he is technical and powerful. A little like Thierry Henry, even if it’s the press who are making that comparison.”
Technical, powerful and full of potential, Martial does sound like the sort of youngster who can thrive at Old Trafford like so many before him but fans will have to make sure the hype doesn’t create unnecessary pressure for him.
United are in real need of a goalscoring striker and Martial will be expected to deliver on that in his first season by Louis van Gaal but there will be patience afforded to him because, after all, he is a 19-year-old who will be moving to a new country and a new league.
That being said, if Martial can live up to the hype which is being built around him and deliver on his potential, then there is a possibility he could be a great signing and that’s what fans will be hoping for.
