Manchester United’s No.9 shirt has been vacant since Radamel Falcao left the club earlier in the summer after an unsuccessful season on loan but could Anthony Martial be taking over the shirt when he joins?
The 19-year-old is not a prolific goalscorer right now, which is more than understandable given the fact he is just a teenager, but he’ll be coming to Man United with one main job – to score goals.
That’s what a No.9 does. Over the years we’ve had the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Andy Cole, Brian McClair and Tommy Taylor who have all donned the shirt and gone on to become prolific goalscorers at Old Trafford. If Martial does take up that shirt, fans will be hoping he can follow in their footsteps.
United has been the place where so many youngsters have become world stars and Martial will be focused on doing just that when he gets the opportunity.
There’ll be immense pressure on Martial straight away from everybody outside of United but the fans will be very patient with him. The fact Falcao was given a standing ovation in his last performance at Old Trafford speaks volumes for how patient fans are with players and Martial will be given the same treatment.
The shirt number is largely irrelevant in most cases but Martial will know what it means to be a club’s No.9 if he is given the shirt and Louis van Gaal is a stickler for numbers (he made James Wilson change his number to include a nine in it because he’s a traditionalist), so here’s hoping he can become the latest No.9 to tear it up at United.
