Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Edouard Cisse believes that Louis van Gaal “killed” Angel di Maria during his time at Manchester United.
Di Maria left Old Trafford this summer to join PSG following an unhappy spell in the Premier League last year.
The Argentine enjoyed a blistering start to life at Man United but a combination of injuries and poor form contributed to a frustrating second half of the campaign.
Cisse attacked van Gaal’s management of Di Maria and insisted the player will turn his fortunes around at the Parc des Princes.
“He [Di Maria] was a little short of sharpness in Monaco, but that’s normal. He will bring rhythm and an ability to cut into defences,” Cisse said.
“He will have a good manager. One of his best seasons came under [Carlo] Ancelotti. Van Gaal killed him. He must be left to express himself, he’s an artist. Laurent Blanc will manage him and he’ll have a very good season.”
Di Maria simply wasn’t the right fit at United, with his expressive style too risky for the pragmatic van Gaal. He is too good a player not to return to form but unfortunately it won’t be at Old Trafford.
