Chelsea’s Cezar Azpilicueta believes David de Gea will continue to do his best for Manchester United despite his failed transfer to Real Madrid.
The Spanish goalkeeper was embroiled in a memorable transfer deadline day mess-up when Madrid ran out of time to sign the player having agreed a fee with Man United earlier in the day.
De Gea must now return to Old Trafford following the collapse of the potential deal that would have brought him to the Bernabeu.
Azpilicueta has played against the 24-year-old several times and believes, based on what he has seen, that De Gea will not miss a beat when he returns to United.
“As a rival, I’ve experienced the affection the United fans have for De Gea and they always respect him and will continue to do so,” Azpilicueta said.
“The supporters at Old Trafford value a lot when a player gives everything and David has always given everything and will continue to do so.
“He is very loved there and the [United] supporters will welcome him with respect. I will have to continue to suffer having him as a rival but I’m convinced everything will go well on his return.”
The good thing about the De Gea debacle is that the he conducted himself very well throughout the ordeal. He did not refuse to play, never portrayed a man who was unhappy with life at United and rarely spoke to the media about the situation. This should make the transition back to being United’s No.1 that little bit easier. He should comfortably return as he is the best keeper in the squad.
