France manager Didier Deschamps has revealed exactly what he saw in new Manchester United signing Anthony Martial to select him for the national side.
Martial made his senior debut during France’s 1-0 friendly win against Portugal on Friday, coming off the bench to replace Karim Benzema.
The 19-year-old signed for Man United on transfer deadline day from Monaco, in a deal worth a reported £36 million. Given the price tag, there is huge pressure on the youngster but Deschamps has listed the attributes that made him select Martial.
When asked about Martial surprise inclusion in the squad, the French manager said: “I selected Martial because he has the skills, speed and power I could not find anywhere else. I’m looking for players like that.”
A player with skills, speed and power? That sounds like the exact sort of player United’s cumbersome attack is in need of.
Deschamps clearly has the belief in Martial’s ability and that is something which was echoed by Goal.com’s Robert Bairner when we had a chat with him about the French youngster. Everybody who has watched him believes he can go on to be great.
Expectations are mounting on Martial but with how he sounds in his interviews since completing a move to United, he has got the right attitude and temperament to deal with that pressure.
