Former Netherlands international Willem Van Hanegem has criticised compatriot Memphis Depay following his performance in the 1-0 defeat against Iceland earlier this week.
Van Hanegem was not impressed with Memphis’ mannerisms during the game.
The Dutch legend feels that Memphis not presenting himself well and that he has a lot more work to do before proving himself as a Manchester United player.
“What is that guy doing? The mannerisms. Does he not have other things to do at that moment with the pressure on? Apparently not. He must stop those mannerisms,” Van Hanegem said.
“He should not think that after two goals against Club Brugge he is already there. It begins for him now, he must prove himself.”
Memphis has had an inconsistent start to his United career. Still without a goal or an assist in the Premier League this season, he put in an underwhelming performance against Swansea City during the 2-1 defeat last time out.
Despite his poor displays in the league, the former PSV Eindhoven man shone against Club Brugge at Old Trafford, scoring two brilliant goals and bagging an assist for Marouane Fellaini. It was a glimpse of what Memphis is all about for United fans but, unfortunately, those sorts of performances have been few and far between.
Since signing this summer, Depay is yet to fully convince United supporters that he is what they have been missing for the past couple of years. However, at 21, the Dutchman still has plenty of time to fulfil his potential.
