Wayne Rooney equals Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring record for England

by Sam Peoples

Wayne Rooney scored a solitary goal against San Marino to pull himself level with Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring record for England.

The converted penalty from Rooney puts him on 49 goals but as he was taken off in a planned substitution, he wasn’t able to break the record.

However, he might not have to wait very long as England have a home game against Switzerland next week. One goal is all Rooney needs to break Sir Bobby’s record and become England’s outright all-time top goalscorer.

From Manchester United’s perspective, it can only be a good thing if Rooney does break the record and goes into the Liverpool game next weekend full of confidence.

You can say what you want about Rooney and whether or not he is on the same level as Sir Bobby but by the end of the season, he could have broken both of his goalscoring records for club and country.
