Jerome Boateng has insisted he disagrees with Bastian Schweinsteiger’s claim that Manchester United are a bigger club than Bayern Munich.
After Man United’s pre-season tour of the United States this summer, Schweinsteiger claimed that his new club is a “bigger” one than Bayern.
The comments went down well in Manchester but they were seen as disrespectful in Germany.
“I don’t think he [Schweinsteiger] meant it the way it was perceived. I believe he meant the international attention,” Boateng said.
“Be that as it may, I don’t believe that Manchester United are bigger than FC Bayern. He was touring the States with United at that time. They have done many of those tours in the past, and thus might be more well-known there.”
Schweinsteiger was likely trying to endear himself to United fans and his comments shouldn’t have been taken too seriously.
Nevertheless, the German has been equally as impressive off the pitch as he has been on it. Schweinsteiger is steadily becoming a fans’ favourite at Old Trafford and his impact on the team cannot be understated. On top of his excellent work in midfield, the 31-year-old’s leadership qualities are there for all to see.
