Michael Carrick withdraws from England squad to face Switzerland due to injury

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad to play Switzerland on Tuesday due to injury.

It is unclear how long the injury will keep Carrick out for but Louis van Gaal will be hoping he is available for the game against Liverpool this weekend.

The 34-year-old missed much of last season thanks to various knocks and the latest setback will come as a blow.

Fortunately, van Gaal’s transfer business this summer has prepared United when it comes to midfield depth.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ander Herrera are all more than capable of performing in the middle of the park and they will likely be called upon against Liverpool.

As for Carrick, he will return to Manchester before beginning his recovery. Although he has seen his game time reduced this term, United fans will be keen for him to get back to full fitness as soon as possible.
