Blind has played at various positions for Manchester United since his move from AFC Ajax in 2014, and has most recently found himself partnering Chris Smalling in central defence.
The 25-year-old Dutch international is something of a utility-man under van Gaal and Cruyff believes that the player has massively improved since he joined Man United.
“His inside passing is ideal, both in terms of speed and direction. This is good proof of what can be achieved with a higher training intensity.”
The majority of United fans were unconvinced of Blind’s defensive qualities in pre-season, with many supporters criticising the club’s decision not to pursue the signing of Nicolas Otamendi, who has now joined Manchester City.
However, the Dutchman has been mostly successful in his new position and forged an effective partnership next to Smalling at the heart of United’s defence.
Praise from Cruyff himself shows just how well Blind is improving at United and is testament to his hard-working mentality. If Blind is to stay at centre-back for the rest of the season, he’ll need to maintain his strong performances in the biggest games such as Liverpool this weekend.
