Xavi: Louis van Gaal is the right man to lead Manchester United

Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi has insisted that Louis van Gaal is the right man to lead Manchester United.

Van Gaal has come under fire from some fans and pundits following Man United’s mediocre start to the season.

Alan Shearer labelled United’s football under the Dutchman as “dull and functional” earlier this week.

However, Xavi dismissed the criticism, describing van Gaal as an “amazing” and “fantastic” coach.

“He is a coach who should be paid attention to,” Xavi said.

“I believe that, in time, he will do a very, very good job with Manchester United. He already is doing [well].

“He’s taken the team into the Champions League and they will be a strong rival for teams in the Premier League and in Europe.

“He is an amazing coach, fantastic. He was ahead of his time [at Barcelona].”

Van Gaal gave Xavi his Barcelona debut during his time in charge at the Nou Camp and it is clear the legendary Spanish midfielder holds his former boss in high regard.

United have backed van Gaal in the transfer market this summer and he now has his own set of players. He deserves praise for overseeing the necessary change in personnel but he can now have no excuses if United fail to be successful this term.
