Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for August.

Man United’s defensive record so far this season has been impressive and that has largely been down to Smalling’s good work at the back.

Along with Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw, United finally look to have an established and reliable back four.

Manchester City’s David Silva and Aleksandar Kolarov will compete with Smalling for the award, as will Swansea City duo Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis. Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez completes the list.

Smalling will be looking to continue his good form when Liverpool travel to Old Trafford this Saturday.

Louis van Gaal’s defensive system has been criticised by some fans and pundits this term but Smalling has been a clear benefactor of the approach. It now seems that he is getting the plaudits his performances have deserved.
