England manager Roy Hodgson believes Manchester United’s Luke Shaw can win 100 caps for the national side.
Shaw went through a tough debut campaign at Man United last season but he has been superb this time around thanks to some extra fitness work during the summer.
The youngster was excellent against Switzerland at Wembley earlier this week and he has firmly established himself as the first-choice left-back for club and country.
Hodgson insisted Shaw can emulate Ashley Cole and become a mainstay in the England set-up for years to come.
“He’s still only 20 and if he keeps going then he’s on track to be another Ashley Cole, a 100 cap man and I would advise him to study Ashley Cole, look at what Ashley did for England and set my sights on the same thing,” Hodgson said.
Cole won 107 caps for England and he is widely regarded to be one of the finest left-backs the country has produced.
Eyebrows were raised when United parted with £30m for Shaw’s services last summer but he is on course to become a world-class player. Hopefully he will continue his good form against Liverpool at Old Trafford this weekend.
