Louis van Gaal says he bought Anthony Martial for his successor…Ryan Giggs

Louis van Gaal is well aware Anthony Martial‘s price is overinflated but said he bought him for his successor at the club, Ryan Giggs.

Speaking at an event alongside Giggs, van Gaal’s acceptance of Manchester United overpaying for Martial only confirms what everybody knew about him but it is his comments about Giggs which are obviously more interesting.

Of course, it’s not the first time van Gaal has openly said Giggs will become his successor at United as at an event last season, he said precisely the same thing.

Giggs has been working under van Gaal for two years now and already managed the club having taken over as interim manager following the sacking of David Moyes, but he hasn’t had a full-time managerial yet in his career.

Van Gaal’s comments, as reaffirmed by United fanzine Red News, have got fans once asking discussing whether Giggs is the right man to success van Gaal when he steps down.

What’s clear to see is van Gaal is all but certain that Giggs will indeed follow him and has every belief he is the right man to take over when he leaves.

It’s an idealistic thought isn’t it? Giggs, having spent his whole career playing for the club, takes over in his first managerial role and leads the club through three decades of success once again.

Whether that becomes a reality or not remains to be seen but van Gaal’s comments on the Martial deal show he is planning to leave something impressive behind him at Old Trafford when he does wave goodbye.
