Louis van Gaal says Wayne Rooney is the best captain he’s ever worked with

Louis van Gaal has gone as far as to say Wayne Rooney is the best captain he has ever had and one of the top four best players he’s managed.

Despite managing the likes of Ronald de Boer, Luis Figo, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philippe Lahm, van Gaal believes Rooney is better in the captain’s role than any of them.

As far as compliments go for Rooney, that’s as big a compliment as van Gaal could pay him given how good the other players have been who worked under the Dutchman as a captain.

That being said, Rooney has been in the limelight for all the right reasons this week after breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record for England by scoring his 50th goal, but on the pitch for United he has been less than a shining light for the club this year so far.
For United, Rooney has actually looked the part as a captain if you completely ignore woeful performances on the pitch.

Van Gaal seems to have every faith in Rooney at every turn which should fill the 29-year-old with confidence but with so many star studded teams which have played under, you do get the feeling there is a better team.
