Games don’t come much bigger than Liverpool at home and Herrera showed away at Anfield last year just how well he can play on these big occasions if given the freedom by Louis van Gaal.
With so many midfield options, somebody is set to miss out on Saturday but having had a two week break, maybe Herrera’s freshness could be used by van Gaal from the start against Liverpool.
When he is given the right position and freedom to roam, Herrera is such a good player but it all depends on whether van Gaal wants to start Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin together. That being said, he could slot nicely in at No.10 with those two playing in deeper midfield roles.
It’s a testament to the quality in United’s side that a player like Herrera can be left on the bench but he’ll be getting plenty of game time as the season wears on, simply because there are so many games to play.
Juan Mata was the Spaniard who made the difference with both goals at Anfield last year but Herrera was instrumental in the build-up play all game. Maybe we’ll see that partnership flourish again on Saturday.
