Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez has chosen to play down the drama over David De Gea‘s failed move to Los Blancos on transfer deadline day.
The Manchester United goalkeeper seemed all set to join Madrid with Keylor Navas going the other way but the move, ultimately, could not be completed in time.
De Gea has now signed a new four-year contract at Man United on Friday but Benitez refused to get drawn into a conversation about the 24-year-old.
Instead, he chose to place his trust in his current goalkeepers. “De Gea belongs to Manchester United and I am satisfied to have Keylor, Kiko and Ruben. Keylor already know this because I have spoken with him,” he said.
Navas’ involvement in the transfer has left Madrid and Benitez in an awkward position. They were willing to let their number one ‘keeper go in order to sign De Gea but after the switch collapsed, the Costa Rican was almost left in limbo.
Benitez is convinced, however, that Navas can put the fiasco behind him.
He added: “Navas knows the trust that I have in him and he is calm and confident. That day [when the deal collapsed] I had dinner with him, his wife and his agent. I just want him to do it very well.
“Yesterday he trained sensationally. He made three or four great saves. So he is not affected. He is delighted [to be here] and me too. I always say the truth.”
De Gea will now turn his attention back to duty with United as they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford on Saturday. With Sergio Romero unable to train with the Reds this week due to his involvement with the Argentine national team, De Gea could find himself straight back into the United starting lineup.
