Manchester United keeper David de Gea is looking forward to “putting a difficult summer” behind him after signing a new contract at Old Trafford.
De Gea signed a four-year deal at Man United on Friday with the option to extend for a further year.
The news comes as a shock considering De Gea was close to a move to Real Madrid on the final day of the Spanish transfer window before it broke down due to late paperwork.
However, the Spaniard insisted United is the right club for him to continue his career.
“I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans,” he said.
“Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.”
The ease at which United have convinced De Gea to sign a new deal following the failed transfer to Madrid suggests something has been agreed behind the scenes. Perhaps there has been a release clause inserted into the contract or there has already been a deal reached with Madrid. However, that can all be worried about later. For now, Dave stays!
