De Gea signed a new four-year contract with Man United on Friday after months of speculation over his future. The Spaniard had been heavily linked with Real Madrid and after his deadline day move failed to materialise, he will now stay at Old Trafford.
Despite the news of the contract, van Gaal is still not convinced that De Gea is ready to start in United’s biggest game of the season so far.
Sergio Romero has played every minute of United’s campaign in goal so far but an underwhelming performance in the 2-1 defeat to Swansea City last time out has the Argentine under pressure.
“You shall see,” van Gaal said when asked about De Gea.
“You never know. His head is empty now and that is important. He can focus. but we have to judge him in training.”
De Gea’s fitness should not be an issue given he started for the Spanish national team in their win over Macedonia on Tuesday. The 24-year-old kept a clean sheet but was rarely troubled as Spain cruised to a 1-0 win.
United’s player of the season for the last two years, De Gea is a fans’ favourite at Old Trafford in spite of the controversy surrounding his proposed move to Madrid. However, now that he has pledged his future to the club, supporters will be desperate to see him back in action. De Gea was outstanding when Liverpool visited United last season and many will be hoping that he features as it will significantly improve the chances of getting a positive result.
