Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has insisted that the upcoming clash against Liverpool is one of the “biggest” fixtures in England.
Mata was part of the Man United team that won home and away against Liverpool last season.
The Spaniard scored in both of the games including a brace at Anfield which was particularly memorable for supporters.
Mata is looking forward to this weekend’s match and the rivalry between the two sides.
“You cannot know it if you don’t live it from the inside. I knew when I came to England that United-Liverpool was one of the biggest games, but when you are inside it and part of it, you realise it is the biggest,” he said.
“The history of both clubs, the rivalry… you can feel it from the start of the week before the game, it’s unbelievable. When we lost my first game against them it was very disappointing and you could feel it in the atmosphere and among the fans. But when we won 3-0 and also won at Anfield, it’s something the people never forget, so it’s always a massive game for us.”
United vs Liverpool is always a special fixture and one that supporters immediately look for when they are announced.
Both sides head into the game off the back of defeats and they will be keen not to lose again, which may result in a nervy match, at least early on. The hope for United fans is that Mata can produce another game-winning performance like the one at Anfield last term.
