Manchester United vs Liverpool: Wayne Rooney set to miss game through injury

by Sam Peoples

Wayne Rooney is set to miss Manchester United’s game against Liverpool today after pulling up in training with a hamstring injury.

Manchester Evening News reports that Marouane Fellaini is set to start up front rather than new signing Anthony Martial.

With James Wilson set to go on loan, Rooney and Martial are the only natural strikers who are going to be in the squad so it will be a dangerous injury if United’s captain is indeed sidelined.

Rooney’s form has been very poor for United but there isn’t really enough depth in the squad for Louis van Gaal to cope with him being unbelievable.

At this stage there is no confirmation on Rooney’s fitness but we’ll know within the next couple of hours whether United’s captain is indeed out with a hamstring injury.

This sort of injury concern was always going to rear its ugly head at some point this season because of how thin the squad is in attack but few expected it to happen so early on.

Van Gaal has said he will ease Martial into his United side across the season but if Rooney is out, he may have to use him earlier than he anticipated.
