The British press were made to eat their words yesterday after new Manchester United signing Anthony Martial scored on his debut.
Martial scored Man United’s third as the Reds wrapped up a 3-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool. After coming on as a second-half substitute, the Frenchman ran through two challenges before stroking the ball past Simon Mignolet, right in front of the Stretford End.
Martial and United had come under heaps of criticism since the 19-year-old completed his big money move from Monaco, and The Mirror already branded him a ‘waste of money.’
However, Martial let his football do the talking for him with a sublime solo goal on debut. It was dream stuff from the young striker, especially bearing in mind the stick he has received from the press since his arrival.
After a whirlwind start to his United career, Martial will hope he will be given time to settle in to life at Old Trafford.
He will aim to get an extended run of games in the first team, starting with United’s trip to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.
With Wayne Rooney out injured, it could be the perfect opportunity for Martial to kick-start his United career.
If that’s the sort of performance a player who was a waste of money can do, United need to sign more of them.
