Ander Herrera admits penalty against Liverpool was his first ever competitive penalty

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera revealed his goal against Liverpool was the first penalty he’s ever taken in a match.

The Spaniard put Man United 2-0 up from the spot after he was fouled by Joe Gomez in the penalty area.

Herrera smashed the ball into the roof of the net passed Simon Mignolet to double United’s lead and put them on their way to a comfortable 3-1 victory.

However, when asked if he had taken penalties before, the 26-year-old admitted to MUTV that he had not.

He said: “Never, never. But the manager last season gave me the confidence. He told me I had the quality to take penalties and I have practiced every week.

“And, today, when I received the penalty, I thought the number-one taker isn’t on the pitch, I’m the second taker so I’m happy for that.”

His effort made him seem like a seasoned professional from the spot with an unstoppable strike into the top left corner.

He added: “I tried [put some force behind it] because I knew in advance that [Simon] Mignolet is a big keeper, very tall and very elastic. I tried to hit it as hard as possible and it was a good goal but the most important thing was the win.”

Herrera’s all round performance was fantastic, as he started in the number 10 position again. His closing down of the Liverpool midfield made sure United won the ball back with ease and his goal topped off a memorable afternoon for the ex-Bilbao man.

The passion was there for all to see when Herrera celebrated his goal and the fans could tell that it meant as much to him as it did to them.
