Angel di Maria: I didn’t get on very well with Louis van Gaal

Angel Di Maria has opened up about the poor relationship he shared with Louis Van Gaal during his time at Manchester United.

The 27-year-old was signed from Real Madrid for a club record fee of £59.7 million but lasted only a single season and was eventually usurped by the in-form Ashley Young.

The Argentinian international has now completed a move to Laurent Blancs PSG, and has spoken of his unhappiness during his time at Man United.

He said: “Honestly, we were not happy. At the beginning, we were a little happy but then things got complicated.

“Life in England was difficult and it isn’t easy for a South American. Some people adapt, but for others it is harder.”

Di Maria also admits he had a difficult relationship with United’s Dutch coach while his family became unsettled when their house in Prestbury, Cheshire, was burgled in February.

He added: “I didn’t get on very well with the coach, so I believe the decision to join Paris was the best solution. After the break-in it wasn’t reasonable to stay. My family wasn’t happy, my daughter was suffering, so it was important to leave.”

Di Maria becomes the latest in a long list of players who have had problems working with van Gaal, with the likes of Rivaldo and Mark Van Bommel also falling out with the Dutch coach during their careers.

However, it is hard to argue with the Dutchman on this occasion. Regardless of his off-pitch problems, Di Maria was criticised for seeming completely uninterested during his time at United, and drew criticisms from some sections of fans who criticised the players work-rate and loyalty to the club.

Following Di Maria’s departure, van Gaal will now look towards the talents of Memphis Depay if his side are to challenge on all fronts this season.
