We’ve said it right from the very start that Bastian Schweinsteiger‘s importance to Manchester United this year lies in far more than just his performances on the pitch.
Against Liverpool, he showed how good he still is in what was arguably his most impressive game in a Man United shirt but it was a small gesture with Anthony Martial that shows the greatest asset he brings to the club.
Imagine being Martial in this situation. You’ve just been brought on in the derby against Liverpool at Old Trafford to make your debut after a big money move, with the game still in the balance.
Then, Schweinsteiger, a World Cup winner and one of the most decorated players in the Premier Legue now, takes you under his wing and helps you, instructs you and directs you. Could there be anything more reassuring than that?
Martial isn’t the first player who Schweinsteiger has taken under his wing either:
Memphis Depay, 21, and Luke Shaw, 20, have also had Schweinsteiger’s arm around their shoulder, ready to chat and help them. It must make such a difference for the younger players to have that voice so close to them.
Last year, one of the biggest flaws in United’s squad has been a distinct lack of leadership but Schweinsteiger is quickly becoming a midfield general in every respect.
Schweinsteiger is more than just a Deutsche Fussball Meister to United but the fact he is getting better with each performance always helps as well doesn’t it?
