PSV boss Philip Cocu backs Memphis Depay to improve at Manchester United

PSV Eindhoven boss Phillip Cocu has backed Memphis Depay to overcome his early Premier League struggles for Manchester United.

The 21-year-old was signed from PSV this summer but despite showing bursts of potential, has largely failed to stamp his authority on the Premier League as of yet.

The Dutch international was substituted at half-time against Liverpool on Saturday after a particularly poor 45 minutes, but Cocu believes that Memphis will come good for Man United eventually.

He said: “I think each player will need some time to get used to a certain league like the Premier League.

“I’m not surprised he’ll have some ups and downs, he’s a player who puts a lot of risks in his actions and if he’s not successful, criticism will follow, on the other hand, he can be decisive also.

“Some games will end good but it will be difficult in the beginning. I’m sure when he’s been playing a few months, I’m convinced he’ll get better and better. He will bring goals. Not only will he score goals, he has good vision, a good eye for his fellow players.”

United supporters need only to look towards the player’s magnificent performance against Club Brugge in the Champions League to allay their concerns.

Memphis was pivotal in United’s 3-1 win over the Belgian outfit and showed that he possesses all the potential to become an integral player for Louis Van Gaal.

Such frustrating performances were also commonplace during Cristiano Ronaldo’s first year at the club, who is now considered the best player in the world by many.

Regardless of Memphis’ frustrating actions, the player must be given both the time and space to improve at his own pace, which will eventually see him become a hugely important player for the club.
