Former PSV manager Aad de Mos believes that his old club have identified Chris Smalling as the weak link in Manchester United’s side.
Smalling has had a brilliant start to the season, as part of a Man United defence that have been resolute thus far. It is, therefore, a shock that De Mos feels the 25-year-old is the defender the Dutch club feel they can take advantage of.
The ex-manager chose to point out Smalling’s inefficiencies with the ball at his feet and claim PSV will use it to get a leg up over United.
“Smalling is regarded as a great defender, but he isn’t the best on the ball,” De Mos told Omroep Brabant.
“PSV have worked it out, they are going to let Smalling have the ball all the time. They know he is limited in his ideas.”
He added: “And if Daley Blind thinks he can come and enjoy a bit of freedom, or dominate the game again, then he will soon realise all the PSV players are going to be after him. They will not leave him alone.
“Depay is not going to get one bit of joy out of his return to Holland, Santiago Arias, the Mexican international defender who knows him inside out, is going to eat him raw.
“Honestly, I am 100 percent sure that Arias will wipe him out.”
De Mos is clearly extremely confident ahead of United’s visit and, given the Reds inconsistent start to the season,
However, a brilliant performance against Liverpool at Old Trafford means United finally have some momentum and they will hope it will help them to a good result in their first Champions League game of the season.
