Chris Smalling urges Manchester United teammates to ‘bounce back’ following PSV Eindhoven defeat

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling was urged his teammates to “bounce back” following the 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

Smalling captained the side in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick and put in another solid performance. However, despite all of Man United’s endeavour, PSV took their chances to go top of the group.

The Englishman already has one eye on United’s next game, a trip to Southampton on Sunday.

Speaking after the clash, Smalling said: “We were missing that cutting edge in the final third.”

There were a lot of bright moments from United, particularly involving Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial. The team just couldn’t apply the finishing touch and were made to pay for their inconsistencies in front of goal.

He added: “We need to learn from it and bounce back on Sunday.”

United turn their attention back to the Premier League and, following their win over Liverpool, will want to keep their good run in the competition going. With five games still left in the Champions League group stage, Smalling and his side know that there is plenty of work to be done if they are to progress to the knockout stages.

The game was overshadowed by the injury to Luke Shaw but United will have to try and put that to the back of their minds as they chase Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
