Daley Blind admits Luke Shaw’s horror injury affected Manchester United players

by Ben Topliss

Daley Blind has admitted that Manchester United were affected by the horror injury Luke Shaw suffered in the 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

Shaw suffered a double fracture of his right leg when he was on the wrong end of an awful tackle by PSV’s Hector Moreno.

Man United managed to edge in front thanks to a superb strike from Memphis Depay but goals from Moreno and Luciano Narsingh sealed victory for PSV.

Blind refused to use Shaw’s injury as an excuse for the loss but did admit that it was a “massive blow”.

“It’s something you may not actually be influenced by at that time. But you can be unaware, perhaps in your head, that you subconsciously sympathise with him,” Blind said.

“But it’s a defeat, and saying this should not pass the buck. It’s a massive blow if such person incurs an injury.

“We are a strong team unit so it cuts into you. Maybe it gets into your heads, but you have to let it pass. We played well in the first half. We created many chances and had the opportunity to decide the game.

“In the second half we didn’t create a lot and they eventually benefited from an error by us. We had enough chances, but failed to finish it.”

It’s safe to say that there weren’t too many United fans focusing on the result following Shaw’s terrible injury.

For such a young player to break their leg is heartbreaking, and the timing is particularly bad given Shaw’s impeccable start to the campaign and the European Championships next summer. It will be difficult for him to recover but he will have the backing of a world-class medical team at Old Trafford.
