Luke Shaw‘s devastating injury has opened up an opportunity for a player who otherwise may have found them hard to come by this season.
Marcos Rojo came back after an extended summer break following the 2015 Copa America but as well as working on his own fitness, he wouldn’t have been able to force his way into the team thanks to the form of Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Shaw.
Now, with Shaw set for an extended recovery period, Rojo is more than likely set to be re-called by Louis van Gaal into the left-back spot.
We’ll be publishing a piece later looking at all the options at left-back for United without Shaw but from a personal point of view, Rojo is the best choice.
What Rojo needs to show at left-back is the sort of consistency which Shaw made look so easy this season, both in the attacking and defensive sense.
It’s a huge blow for United that Shaw has suffered such a bad injury but in a non-Schadenfreude type of way, Rojo will be glad that an opportunity has presented itself and it’ll be one which he’ll grab with both hands.
When on-form, Rojo’s a decent left-back and has played there for Argentina on a regular basis but his greatest challenge is making sure he can do the whole role at both ends of the pitch, otherwise Louis van Gaal may look elsewhere to replace Shaw.
