Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed his reasoning behind choosing to come to Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old made the move from Bayern Munich to Man United in the summer after spending his whole life at the German club and has made a stellar start to his United career.
It was a transfer that many thought was completely unrealistic. Schweinsteiger is a Bayern legend and very few people could see him leaving the club. However, when United came knocking, the German captain couldn’t resist.
“I felt within myself that I needed to change what I was doing,” Schweinsteiger told Die Zelt.
Having been at Bayern since the age of 14 it is understandable that the midfielder needed a change of scenery.
He added: “I needed a new stimulus. So the interest from Manchester United was a perfect fit.”
Schweinsteiger has slotted into United’s setup extremely well and has performed admirably in a holding midfield role for Louis van Gaal. There were doubts over his fitness since he joined the club but, with minutes under his belt, he is beginning to prove his critics wrong.
Schweinsteiger made more passes this weekend against Liverpool than any other midfielder in the Premier League and he seems to be United’s long overdue replacement for Paul Scholes. He has dictated games from start to finish, controlling the tempo almost singlehandedly.
United fans have been delighted with the first German to play for their club thus far and his experience and nuance will definitely aid the Reds in their bid to win silverware this season.
