Ruud van Nistelrooy feels Anthony Martial ‘could be a revelation’ at Manchester United but is trying to manage his expectations of him.
The 19-year-old set the world alight with his debut goal against Liverpool and continued that with an extremely assured performance away to PSV Eindhoven where he played up front as a lone striker.
Although van Nistelrooy is excited about Martial, he doesn’t want to try and add any extra pressure onto his shoulders at this stage.
“If Martial keeps doing what he did against Liverpool he could be a revelation,” van Nistelrooy said before United’s 2-1 defeat to PSV on Tuesday.
“On the other side is it really realistic to expect that from him? Hopefully for United he can be the one.
“He looks like the out and out striker that is needed.
“Wayne Rooney is playing in that position but I don’t think he is an out and out striker.
“Obviously he can fulfil that role and score his goals but it would be a good combination if Martial was up front and Rooney was just off him. That would be a good strike force.
“I didn’t know anything about Anthony but it could be one of those unexpected successes.
“He needs time, but he looks like he has a lot of quality.”
The only expectations which rest on Martial’s shoulders are the ones which he is setting himself which some excellent performances straight away at the club and he’ll be eager to continue that form just as much as the fans are.
Whether or not Wayne Rooney will finish the season as United’s top scorer, which is what many expected, remains to be seen but if Martial can simply maintain the sort of form he has shown so far, something he has made look easy, then there is nothing to suggest the Frenchman can’t become the main man up front before the season is over.
