Shaw is yet to travel back to Manchester having had surgery on the double broken leg he suffered in Man United’s 2-1 loss to PSV.
It was a cruel moment for the 20-year-old, who had started the season extremely well. He is expected to have another operation on his right leg today and van Gaal thinks he could return to Manchester as early as tomorrow.
“He knows it’s also a long way he has to go. It’s not easy, but his family are there. We will send people to him and when he can come back, we have everything prepared.”
The early signs are good for Shaw, despite such an awful injury. The full-back seems to be in a good state of mind, something that will get exponentially more difficult the longer he is out of the game.
Van Gaal added: “Maybe he shall come back tomorrow, and then have a long period of rehab. So he still has a long way to go.”
Shaw’s injury is a massive blow to United, as he has been arguably their best player this season. However, with Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo both available, van Gaal knows he has more than capable replacements. The whole team will need to try and put the incident behind them as they travel to Southampton on Sunday. Having lost in the Champions League, it is crucial that the Reds bounce back and pick up all three points at St Mary’s.
